Incredible Kazakhstan · Big Almaty Peak + the lake

Big Almaty Peak summit hike

A private guided day from the lake road up past the Kosmostantsiya station to the summit of Big Almaty Peak, about 3,680 m, and back via the lake. Pick it if you are a strong hiker who wants to stand above the lake, not beside it.

Big Almaty Peak Summit Hike & the Lake

About this experience

Big Almaty Peak is the sharp pyramid you see behind the lake in most photos, about 3,680 m high. Incredible Kazakhstan runs a private day to its summit. A jeep collects you at your hotel and drives about 50 minutes up the gorge; from there you walk. The itinerary gives about 2.5 hours to the lake, then roughly 2 hours up the road past Kosmostantsiya, the cosmic-ray station at the Zhusaly-Kezen pass, and about 105 minutes on to the summit.

The numbers are serious: 20 to 25 km and 1,500 to 1,700 m of climb in about ten hours, back down via the lake. The guide carries the logistics: trekking poles, park fees, help with the border control checks, water, soft drinks and light snacks are included, and groups of seven or more get a second guide. Meals, personal gear and optional Kazakh insurance are not.

The track record is short. The tour is rated 5.0, but from only three reviews. One September 2026 guest praised the booking, the pickup and guide Ilyas, and also warned that the day is long and demanding, with a lot of scree high up. The listing excludes under-14s, over-70s and anyone with diabetes, altitude sickness, high blood pressure or low fitness. If you have never hiked above 3,000 m, start with the lake hike.

Tips before you book

  • Spend a day or two acclimatising first. The lake hike or a walk at Shymbulak helps.
  • Wear boots with stiff soles. Guests mention a lot of scree near the top.
  • Bring proper layers: snow can fall on the summit even in summer.
  • Carry your original passport. The guide helps at the border checks, but needs the real document.
  • Consider the optional insurance. A rescue at 3,600 m is no small thing.
