Snow bike to the frozen lake

From about November to April the lake freezes under snow and the gorge turns white. DAO Travel's winter tour picks you up at your hotel, drives about an hour by jeep to the start, and then you ride for around three hours with an instructor. Rental, safety equipment and the instructor are included. The listing makes a clear distinction: Big Almaty Lake is open to snow bikes only, not snowmobiles. The snowmobile version of the same listing goes to other snowy areas, so contact the operator before you book to pick the right one.

There is a 2026 caveat you should not skip. On 30 April 2026 the national park extended its road restrictions on the lake road to motorised equipment, including e-scooters and e-bikes. The listing still says e-bikes may use the lake road, so confirm in writing with DAO Travel that the snow bike can reach the lake on your date. If it can't, you could end up on a ride somewhere else.

It is weather and snow sensitive, food is not included, and the listing rules out pregnant travellers and people with pre-existing medical conditions. Tips before you book

• Message DAO Travel before you book. Ask for snow bike, not snowmobile, and ask whether it can reach the lake under the April 2026 rules.
• Dress for minus temperatures: thermal layers, waterproof gloves and a warm hat.
• Bring your passport or ID. The listing asks for it, and the gorge is a border zone.
• Eat before pickup and bring snacks. Food is not included.
• Keep your plans flexible. Heavy snow or avalanche risk can move or cancel the ride.
