Big Almaty Lake sits at the top of the Almaty to Kosmostantsiya road, about 15 km south of the city. For years you could take a taxi to the viewpoint. Since 2020 you cannot, and every season since has added a rule rather than removed one.
This post sets out the access rules as they stand on 23 October 2026, with the dates and the sources behind each one, so you can plan a visit without turning up at a closed barrier.
The quick answer
Private cars have been barred from the lake road since 2020, apart from about a month in 2023. On 30 April 2026 the ban was extended to motorbikes, e-scooters, e-bikes and other motorised equipment. You can still walk up from the upper checkpoint (6 to 7 km, about 800 m of climb) or join a tour whose guests switch into small permit cars at the parking area. Shuttles and a cable car are being studied, with no launch date.
Can you drive your own car to Big Almaty Lake in 2026?
No. Only service, scientific and maintenance vehicles with an approval may use the upper road, and the park says lifting the ban is not being considered.
The road was closed in March 2020 after washouts and landslides, and it has stayed shut to private traffic ever since. The one break came in 2023, when the section from km 8 to km 34 reopened for about a month before closing again, according to Kazinform (June 2025). In February 2025 the road passed from the national road company KazAvtoZhol to the Almaty city government.
In mid-August 2025 the park shut entry altogether for a spell, citing the top fire-danger class in the forest. When that lifted, the car ban stayed. In November 2025 Ile-Alatau National Park told Tengrinews that removing the ban on private cars "is not being considered" and that any change would need a full assessment of ecological risk, road capacity and engineering safety first. The road is staffed by the park and police around the clock, and driving past the barrier without permission is an administrative offence.

What did the April 2026 rule change for e-bikes and scooters?
Since 30 April 2026 motorbikes, e-scooters, e-bikes and any other motorised equipment are banned on the lake road, on top of private cars.
For a while the e-bike was the clever workaround. Rental outfits fitted riders at the foothills and sent them up the asphalt. Then the forestry service started logging crashes, injuries and groups of riders leaving the road with no instructor and tearing up the grass. On 30 April 2026 Murat Ryskul, forester of the Medeu branch, announced at a press conference that the road section to the lake is closed to private cars, motorcycles and motorised equipment, e-scooters and e-bikes included (BES.media, Kazinform).
His reasons: steep grades, blind bends, rockfall and the danger of mixing different kinds of traffic on a narrow mountain road. He called it a forced measure, "aimed solely at safety". Patrols, raids and duty shifts were stepped up at the same time.
Watch out for old listings. E-bike tours to the lake still show up on some booking sites, and a May 2026 travel blog still described e-bike rental as an option. The park rule says otherwise. If someone sells you an e-bike ride to the lake, ask in writing how they square it with the April ban before you pay.
How do tours still reach Big Almaty Lake by car?
Tour groups drive to the parking area by the upper checkpoint, then switch into small cars run by drivers with permits for the last stretch, about 15 minutes to the lake.
This is the part most visitors miss. The ban covers private vehicles, not permit holders. A visitor who went up in May 2026 described the change at the parking area to cars "operated by individuals with permits to drive the roads", usually four people to a car, and a ride of about 15 minutes to the top (Eternal Arrival). The hotel-pickup tour from Almaty Tours by Birlik lists the same step: a transfer to a smaller mountain vehicle for the final road.
The result is the same on every car tour: about an hour at the viewpoints, then down again. The Adam Hiking Tours car trip adds the Alma-Arasan hot springs and lunch, and the 6 am no-hiking tour is the cheapest way up without walking. Nobody on any tour goes down to the shore: the lake is Almaty's drinking-water reservoir.

Permit car to the lake, about an hour at the viewpoints, then Alma-Arasan and lunch. The easy way round the ban.

Yes. Walking is allowed. From the upper checkpoint it is 6 to 7 km and about 800 m of climb, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours up.
Walkers pay the Ile-Alatau eco-fee at the checkpoint, 648.75 tenge in 2026, and carry their original passport: the gorge is in the border zone with Kyrgyzstan. Most people take a taxi to the barrier and walk either the asphalt serpentine, which is longer but even, or the steep path beside the water pipeline. Start from the GES-2 bus stop and it grows to about 12 km. AIR Press, updated on 18 October 2026, tells walkers coming from the lower gorge to allow 4 to 6 hours up and 3 to 4 hours down.
Book your ride back before you set off. Taxis are scarce at the barrier late in the day, and the walk down on tired legs is where people come unstuck. Our hike guide covers both routes in detail.
Walk up with a guide, with transport to the eco-post and about four hours at the lake.
Check dates for the guided hikeWill shuttles, a cable car or a repaired road change access?
Not this season. Electric shuttles are still being studied, a cable car exists only as a concept, and the 26.5 km road repair has no published finish date.
Three projects are on the table. The park told Tengrinews in November 2025 that it is studying electric buses or shuttles, with a decision to follow an ecological and technical review; AIR Press reported in October 2026 that no decision has been taken. A government deputy minister had earlier spoken of electric buses run with private investors (Kazinform, February 2026).
On 23 July 2026 the akim of Almaty, Darkhan Satybaldy, was shown a concept for a cable car station serving the lake and a capital repair of 26.5 km of the Almaty to Kosmostantsiya road, including the branch to the Alma-Arasan sanatorium and a new parking zone (BES.media, NUR.KZ). Neither report gave a cost or a timeline for the cable car. A repaired road does not mean an open road, either: officials talk about "controlled tourism", not a return of private cars.
The one project with a deadline is the new 5.3 km footpath, due by the end of November 2026. We cover it in our post on the new trail.
What does the road ban mean for a visit this autumn and winter?
Plan on one of three ways up: a permit car with a tour, your own legs, or a snow bike in winter. Check the snow bike against the April rule before booking.
Autumn is a good time to go. The crowds thin from mid-September, the birches turn yellow and the tours run as usual. From November the lake freezes, the upper road fills with snow and avalanche warnings start. The winter snow bike tour is the odd one out: its listing says the lake is open to snow bikes, while the April 2026 rule bans motorised equipment on the road. We would ask the operator to confirm the route for your date. More in our winter 2026-27 post.

Frequently asked questions
Is the road to Big Almaty Lake open in 2026?
The road is open to walkers and to service and permit vehicles only. Private cars have been barred since 2020, and motorbikes, e-scooters and e-bikes since 30 April 2026.
Can I take a taxi to Big Almaty Lake?
Only as far as the checkpoint below the lake. From there you walk 6 to 7 km, or you join a tour that switches guests into small permit cars at the parking area.
Can I ride an e-bike to Big Almaty Lake?
Not on the lake road. Since 30 April 2026 the Ile-Alatau forestry service bans e-bikes, e-scooters, motorbikes and other motorised equipment there, citing crashes and riders leaving the road.
Will the car ban be lifted?
Not soon. In November 2025 the national park said lifting it is not being considered, and the plans shown in July 2026 point to shuttles, a cable car and a footpath rather than private cars.
